Xanthelasmae
What is xanthelasma?
Xanthelasmas are yellowish skin bumps on the upper and lower eyelid and near the tear duct of the eye. Their yellow color is due to the local deposition of lipids and fatty products into the skin.
Xanthelasmas are often seen in patients with overweight, diabetes, lipoid neurosis, pancreatitis, cirrhosis of the liver, high blood cholesterol with low blood density. The condition may be hereditary. In such cases, a genetic disorder of lipid metabolism occurs during the first year after birth.
This plaque never transforms into a malignant process and does not pose a threat to the human organism. However, large and multiple xanthelasms are a serious cosmetic problem.
Treatment of Xanthelasmas
The diagnosis is made after examination by an eye specialist. Treatment is surgical removal of the formations.
